Psychology and Sociology Double Major

The B.A. program teaches you about the science of Psychology. Students learn basic findings and theories in the field of Psychology and learn about the methods through which that knowledge is generated. It is not an applied program. In other words, more formal training is needed after the B.A. degree be a licensed clinician/counselor/ therapist/ psychologist who provides direct services to people. The B.A. in Psychology provides a useful course of study that will enable students to pursue an advanced degree. 

Psychology Learning Outcomes

• Display knowledge of several areas of specialization in psychology (i.e., abnormal, biopsychology, cognitive, developmental, and social psychology).
• Demonstrate skills in scientific reasoning, such as deductive reasoning and critical thinking.
• Demonstrate skills in information gathering, such as the ability to locate empirical information from sources like the library or internet.
• Demonstrate skills in writing well-organized, well-supported papers with correct punctuation, grammar, usage, and spelling. In other words, they should be able to clearly convey their message in writing.
• Demonstrate ability to accurately cite and reference sources using the formatting style of the current Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. In other words, they should be able to use the basic components of the formatting style of our discipline.
• Display knowledge of research methodology, including data analysis and statistics, in Psychology.

Sociology applies the methods of social science to understand how broader social forces influence our thoughts, beliefs and behavior. It provides an important background for careers in human resources, education, business, law, social work, criminal justice, politics, arts, sports, and public administration. 

PSY classes are all in person; SOC classes may be in person or online.
